Chelsea are yet to give up on their pursuit of Romelu Lukaku

Chelsea have reportedly not given up on their pursuit of Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku after failing to convince Borussia Dortmund to sell Erling Braut Haaland.

According to The Athletic, the 2020/21 Champions League winners will maintain pressure on the reigning Serie A champions over Lukaku after seeing their previous two bids rejected.

It is no secret that Chelsea are looking to add a top-class striker to solve the scoring woes that troubled the team last season under both Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel.

Kai Havertz and Timo Werner arrived from the Bundesliga last summer for a hefty combined fee but failed to ensure regular goal flow at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are interested in signing Haaland, who has grown into one of Europe’s deadliest strikers despite his young age.

However, Dortmund are reluctant to sell Haaland this summer after already sanctioning Jadon Sancho’s move to Manchester United.

As a result, Chelsea have shifted their attention towards Lukaku, hoping to spark an old flame.

Following an underwhelming stint at Manchester United, the 28-year-old marksman moved to Inter in summer 2019 and has since excelled in Serie A.

During his two-year spell at the Giuseppe Meazza, the Belgium international has developed into one of the best strikers in Europe.

Having scored at least 30 goals in each season under former Inter boss Antonio Conte, Lukaku helped the Nerazzurri bring Juventus’ nine-year reign in Serie A to an end last term.

His remarkable displays in Italy have not gone unnoticed, with Chelsea looking to give him a genuine opportunity to prove his quality this time around.

Lukaku was on the Blues’ payroll between 2011 and 2014 but failed to land regular first-team chances.

After being loaned out two years in a row, the Belgian left west London permanently in 2014 to link up with Everton.

Despite a disappointing first stint at Stamford Bridge, Lukaku could be tempted by the prospects of leading the line under Tuchel next season.
